Lectures
If by “lectures” we understand not only formal lectures but teaching in a broader sense, then I am glad to say that this has been one of the most important and fulfilling aspects of my professional life.
it was my calling
My parents were schoolteachers in a small village elementary school. We lived in the school building, and my mother had no alternative but to keep me in her classroom during her working hours. Ever since then, I have felt that a classroom or lecture hall of any kind, in any country, is my true home. That is where I belong, where I have always felt most inspired and at my best. I have treasured those interactions with every kind of audience: with my students at the College of the Holy Cross for thirty-two years, but equally with Jain nuns in India, participants in the Schweitzer Summer School in France, and adult audiences gathered in a village library in Serbia.
Looking back, I realize that teaching—in the broadest sense of the word— was not merely my profession; it was my calling.
